The convective complex was located just to the northeast of DTX (Detroit) at 12 UTC on the 18th. The DTX sounding was modestly unstable at 12 UTC on the 18th. A layer of dry air between 700 and 500 mb was evident. This dry air could have worked into the backside of the convective complex located just to the east at this time, which would have enhanced its capability to produce strong surface winds.
