Heavy Rain band
Slide Links:
Speaker Notes:
This cross-section shows a strong area of frontogenesis sloping toward the northwest from Pennsylvania across western New York. There appears to be a double maximum, one centered around 850 mb, and another located above 300 mb. The resulting upward branch of the ageostrophic circulation extends through the mid-level unstable zone indicated by the green shading (negative EPV). The "feeder" band appears to occur near where the front intersects the ground, while the primary heavy band near BUF is at the northwest edge of the mid-level frontogenesis.
