This vertical cross section (from Delmarva to southeast Michigan) shows a deep maximum of omega and mid-level instability (negative EPV indicated by green shading) located near the heavy rain band across southwest Pennsylvania. The heavy rain band across southern Pennsylvania and Virginia is associated with surface-based instability and a secondary, weaker area of upward motion.
