These events are a great opportunity to evaluate the quality of radar rainfall estimates – compare tropical vs. convective Z/R relationships.
The tropical Z/R relationship appeared to work better in some cases than in others.
In Ivan, the tropical Z/R appeared to overestimate rainfall in NY, but worked well in Pennsylvania.
In Frances, the tropical Z/R appeared to overestimate rainfall early in the event, but worked better later in the event.
