This is an Eta 0-hr cross-section of 2-D frontogenesis (white contours), saturated EPV (with weakly stable (just above zero) and unstable (negative) values shaded), and omega (light blue contours), valid at 12z, 9/18/04. The most persistent heavy rainfall continued to align itself where strong low-level frontogenesis was just below good low to mid-level instability, producing a deep layer of omega. Convective feeder bands were developing at the very leading edge of the sloped frontal zone, in the presence of deep instability.
