Summary

  • The radar-indicated rotation associated with 2 tornadoes on August 12 was below what is normally associated with tornadoes in our area.

  • Main factor with the Steuben County storm was range. Rotational parameters such as Vr shear of limited value at such long distances.

  • Interactions between the Steuben County supercell and boundaries associated with nearby storms likely contributed to tornadogenesis in the Steuben County storm.

  • The Bradford county storm was likely a shallow "land-spout" and was basically undetectable using current technology.

  • The rotation associated with the bow echo over Sullivan county was strong enough to warrant a tornado warning.

  • RUC analysis indicated that the low-level environment was more favorable for tornadoes over Steuben County than over Sullivan County.
