An important real-time clue for diagnosing and anticipating the intensity of snow bands east of Lake Ontario can be found using satellite imagery. The most intense snow bands east of Lake Ontario typically have a "Lake Huron to Lake Ontario connection", and often a "Lake Superior to Lake Huron to Lake Ontario" connection. Recall that at 18z on the 2nd, no clear connection could be seen. By 00z on the 3rd, the connection appears to be developing.
