Another source of observational data that can be very useful when trying to diagnose and forecast the evolution of a lake effect snow band east or southeast of Lake Ontario is the Syracuse profiler wind data. Note the strengthening of the low-level shear that occurred between the afternoon on the 2nd, when the band was disorganized, to the morning on the 3rd, when the band became very intense and well organized. Recall from earlier slides that this increasing low-level shear is typically associated with a backed low-level south of the band, and typically results in increased low-level convergence into the band.
