Summary and Conclusions

  • A band of heavy snow developed along an east-west oriented low-level trough axis within a large area of light snow on the west side of a deep cyclone.

  • The band was associated with strong low-level frontogenesis (centered around 900 mb).

  • The strong temperature gradient associated with the frontogenesis was difficult to detect using surface observations, due to terrain effects. The gradient was much stronger at 900 mb.

  • The NAM model accurately forecast the intensity and location of the frontogenesis 24 hours prior to its development.

  • However, the NAM QPF apparently did not respond to the frontogenesis.

  • The NMM_WRF reflectivity product also accurately forecast the position of the band 24 hours prior to its development.
