Meso-vortices develop along the leading edge of bow-echoes in strongly sheared environments when horizontal vorticity is tilted to vertical by strong downdrafts.

Meso-vortices can develop on the north or south side of the apex of a bow echo (north side is favored).

Meso-vortices sometimes develop when a bow echo intersects a pre-existing boundary.
