Synoptic Setting – 2nd Phase (Late on the 25th into the AM of the 26th )

  • Moist, cyclonic flow pattern continues

    • Closed 500 mb vortex deepened and moved to the Canadian Maritimes between 00z and 12z, 1/26

    • Most of the short-wave energy had moved offshore, with mainly channeled vorticity coming in from the west

  • Deep-layered cold advection well established

    • "Core" of the cold air coming into Western/Central NY by 12z, 1/26

      • Leading edge of -12C or colder air at 850 mb heading into the region
