Synoptic Setting – 1st Phase (Early on the 25th)

  • Moist, cyclonic flow pattern in place

    • Closed 500 mb vortex moved across southern Ontario/Northern NY between 00z and 12z, 1/25

    • Several short-waves rotated around this feature

  • Deep-layered cold advection developed

    • However, since air mass was initially so mild, 850 mb temperatures had only cooled to around -8C over Central NY by 12z, 1/25
