Summary

  • The Jan. 25-26, 2006 LES event for Central NY had two well defined periods of concentrated banding

    • Lake enhancement from Lake Huron/Georgian Bay/Lake Ontario combined with strong short-wave forcing and a moist, unstable column to produce a brief period of +SN in the Finger Lakes region early on the 25th (local 3-4" in a 6-hour period)

    • Multi-bands, with enhancement from the Finger Lakes, produced 3-6" in roughly a 12-hour period over Cayuga/Tompkins/Tioga/Broome/Cortland/Southern Onondaga from late on the 25th into early on the 26th

      • Although mid-level forcing had waned by this time, deep-layered moisture remained well above the inversion base, and low-level lapse rates had also steepened with colder air in place
