Summary

  • The heavy snow event of April 16, 2007 occurred with a cyclone that deepened rapidly through the mid-troposphere off the New Jersey coast.

  • Intense mid-tropospheric deformation and frontogenesis developed on the northern-northwest side of the cyclone during the deepening phase.

  • Heavy snow bands occurred in association with the mid-tropospheric frontogenesis, in the TROWAL region of the storm.

  • Negative EPV was forecast just prior to and during the onset of the banding. Negative EPV regions appeared to diminish during the “mature” phase of the banding event.
