Visible Satellite ImageryNotes:While forecast soundings (shown later) indicated that the mean wind direction would be more or less constant through the event, the orientation of the snow bands did vary slightly during the evening, indicating some minor wind shifts. These shifts determined whether or not a “Georgian bay” connection would be established with the snow bands over central New York. These Georgian bay connections have been associated with many heavy lake effect events in the Syracuse area.Visible satellite imagery showed a clear Georgian bay connection associated with the snow band over central New York on the 5th. The connection was gone by the 6th, as upstream trajectories became more northerly. By the 7th, a connection could again be seen from Georgian Bay east-southeast across Lake Ontario into the Syracuse area.
