VAD wind profiles from the KBGM radar at 12z, 15z and 18z
Notes:
In addition to the heavy rain, another concern with hurricane Irene was the potential for wind damage. Even moderately strong winds blowing for several hours on trees in saturated ground would be enough to cause downed trees and power outages. The VAD wind profile from the KBGM WSR-88D radar indicated 50 to 60 kt winds 4000 ft above the ground, with 30 to 35 kt winds at 2000 feet.
