Omega and negative EPV time-height diagramNotes:This time-height diagram shows negative EPV (shaded blue) and vertical motion at Binghamton, NY. Note the juxtaposition of strong upward vertical motion and a deep layer of negative EPV, for several hours, at Binghamton. The co-location of strong upward motion and negative EPV has been observed in many previous heavy snow storms. Also, the pattern of a strong, deep initial burst of negative EPV at the onset of the heaviest snowfall has also been observed previously. In this storm, light to moderate snow fell at Binghamton for several hours through 03z, then the heaviest snow occurred between 03z and 09z, when 1 to 2 inches of snow per hour accumulated. ![]() Slide 17 |
