The data on this cross-section shows a potential vorticity maxima in the mid-troposphere over southwest New York, with strong ageostrophic southeasterly outflow aloft (red arrows). The magnitude of the ageostrophic flow is indicated by the blue contours. As was the case at 00z, the outflow was likely contributing to the strong upper-tropospheric jet located over southern Canada. A strong maximum of upward vertical motion (red shading) is co-located with the potential vorticity maxima.
