This Eta BUFKIT forecast sounding at BGM shows some very steep lapse rates (around 8 C/km) near 500 mb at 00z on the 28th. This confirms that model forecasts were indicating a layer of mid-level instability as the maximum upward vertical motion moved across the area during the evening on the 27th.
