By early afternoon, the first shortwave had passed off to the east. Mid-level dry air had swept east to cover the area. The instability was beginning to increase. Deep shear was present with a 5 km storm relative wind of 13 m/s (26 kts). Many studies have shown that strong mid-level storm relative winds are favorable for the development of tornadoes. The straight-line hodograph forecast by the model indicated that the environment would be favorable for splitting cells.
