Meso-eta 6-hr cross-section of 2-D frontogenesis (white contours) and saturated EPV (shaded, with weakly stable (just above zero) and unstable (negative) values highlighted), valid at 00z, 9/09/04. Heavy rain bands over western PA at this time were well collocated with strong frontal-scale forcing around 850 mb and a deep layer of instability. Convective feeder bands were forming at the very leading edge of the sloped front, with deep instability.
