How shear effects storm morphology

shear and storm morphology

Speaker Notes:

In addition to affecting the degree of lift experienced by air parcels at the leading edge of the cold pool, recent modeling studies indicate that shear can also effect whether or not storms ahead of a moving boundary can organize into lines, or remain isolated. This diagram shows that when the shear vector is oriented perpendicular to a boundary, storms tend to merge to form lines. When the shear is oriented approximately 45 degrees to the boundary, the storms are more likely to remain isolated.
