Cross section of Div Q (blue contours), frontogenesis (shaded) and omega (brown contours) (February 13, 18 UTC 6-hr NAM forecast)
Notes:
The series of cross sections on the next few slides confirms the evolution of the relationship between the lower-tropospheric frontogenesis and the forcing associated with the upper-level wave. The cross-section was taken across the area where a significant front developed during the storm, and across the area where very heavy precipitation was observed. During the evening on the 13th, the forcing for upward vertical motion along the cross-section was mainly due to lower-to-mid tropospheric frontogenesis (the Q-vector convergence maxima was co-located with the frontogenesis maxima).
