Normalized rotation trends

Notes:

The data on this slide shows values of GR2 analyst-calculated normalized rotation from the Binghamton WSR-88D at 0.5 degrees, 0.9 degrees and 1.4 degrees, for the storm that produced the tornado west of Rome. In this case, moderately strong (0.5 to 0.90) rotation occurred for several volume scans prior to tornado touchdown, however no pronounced increase was observed just prior to the tornado development. The highest rotational value was at 1.4 degrees several volume scans prior to the tornado. There was some tendency for the 1.4 degree rotation to decrease while rotation at 0.9 and 0.5 degrees increased prior to the tornado occurrence, indicating that the rotation associated with this storm may have spun down from mid-levels.
