Band formation schematics
Notes:
Conceptual models for heavy snow band development all key on areas of mid-level frontogenesis near the north or northwest side of mid-level cyclonic circulations. Other common features associated with this conceptual models are contributions from upper level jets (either coupled jets or the band forming within the left exit region of the jet). Also important is a region of EPV reduction, or reduced stability, interacting with the frontogenesis as shown in the schematic at the bottom of the slide.
