RUC sounding at BGM 1/18 07z

Notes:

A RUC sounding at BGM, approximately 75 miles west of the heavy snow band, indicated a deep, saturated layer in the dendritic snow growth zone (temperatures between -12 and -18 degrees C). The lapse rate was around 6.4 degrees C above the snow growth zone, in the layer where the RUC was forecasting the strongest lift. This combination of a deep snow growth zone and steep lapse rates in the zone of maximum lift was favorable for a period of heavy snowfall. Note that the heavy snow ended up being just east of this area, in the area where the frontogenesis band slowed its eastward progression.
