Summary

  • A significant severe weather event occurred across south-central New York on July 13, 2014.
  • The environment was characterized by modest values of MLCAPE and large low-level shear and storm relative helicity.
  • The values of MLCAPE and low-level shear and storm relative helicity in this case were consistent with previous tornadic events in our area.
  • The storms that produced the tornadoes were low-topped mini-supercells, located 50-55 nm from the radar.
  • For the Schuyler county tornado, strong rotation was only detectable at 0.5 degrees for one volume scan.Strong rotation was never detectable for the Sullivan county tornado.
