KDP and instantaneous rain rate near Watkins Glen

A time series of specific differential phase (KDP) and instantaneous rain rate is shown on this slide. The data was obtained for a small area near Watkins Glen, near the center of the heaviest rainfall and most significant flash flooding. The relationship between KDP and instantaneous rainfall rate is clear in the slide; KDP values generally ranged from 3 to 4 degrees per km during the heaviest rainfall, while instantaneous rainfall rates ranged from 4 to 5 inches per hour.
