ZDR and KDP maxima near Watkins Glen

A time series of differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) near Watkins Glen is shown on this slide. Maximum ZDR values ranged from 4 to 5 dbz during the event, however recall that large areas of ZDR less than 3 dbz were indicated across most of the heavy rain area. This indicates that while there were small areas of large, convective raindrops, much of the rain for this event was characterized by smaller drops. KDP values generally were near 3 degrees per km through the heavy rain portion of the event, which is slightly lower than the 4 to 5 degree per km values seen with some of our other flash floods during this summer.
