Schematic for pivoting bands

Notes:

This schematic shows the pattern associated with pivoting bands. Surface low pressure is to the east of the bands, and the mid-level cyclone is also closed off and to the east, with the pivoting band located west of the mid-level cyclone in an area of strong frontogeneseis. Note also the existence of coupled upper level jets, with the band area located within the left exit region of one jet and the right entrance region of another jet to the north. This was the pattern during the main part of the storm, when surface low pressure was developing rapidly along the mid-Atlantic coast and tracking toward New England.
